Over the period of two years, students are provided a sufficiently wide and comprehensive knowledge in the discipline of law to be put to practice in the capacity of a lawyer’s assistant or any other occupation requiring application of laws and other regulatory enactments. This Program is a remarkable first step on the way to the career of a barrister, judge or a legal adviser. Study courses and specialized training: theory of law, history of law, constitutional law, property law, family law, contractual law, law of succession, administrative law, labour law, criminal law, European law, civil law, civil procedure, administrative procedure etc. Within the study courses, students are provided an opportunity to visit Saeima (Parliament) of Republic of Latvia, offices of barrister and notaries, LR Courts and Land Register Divisions. Optional specialized training: Real estate law, Commercial law, Labour and social law, Municipal law, European law, Mediation*. In the next study year, we will offer a new type of specialized training having gained high popularity overseas but as yet unavailable in Latvia: mediation or the alternative solution of disputes. For that purpose, we have attracted teaching staff from Germany and the USA. As a part of studies, students are provided a study practice in law enforcement and public institutions. *Mediation,a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) or “appropriate dispute resolution”,is a way of resolving disputes between two parties. A third party member is involved in order to structure the meetings, and to help the parties come to a final decision based on the facts given through the discussions. Mediation is not legally binding so it does not have to be followed, although if one party does not, they can sometimes be taken to court by the disadvantaged member, depending on the mediation agreement.
